Limits and time-outs: the arithmetic version

This page does not try to motivate anyone. It does arithmetic. The mathematics of a slot is built so that a player finishes behind over the long run, and no system, hour of day or streak changes that. The only two variables genuinely under anyone's control are how many euro and how many minutes.
Cost per hour, which nobody calculates
Start with an unfamiliar figure: what an hour of play costs on average. Take the stake, multiply by the number of rounds per hour, then take the share the game keeps. A fifty-cent stake at roughly six hundred rounds an hour puts three hundred euro of turnover through the machine in that hour; a house share of four percent of turnover makes the expected cost of the hour about twelve euro. That number is not a prediction of one evening — it is the price of the entertainment, and it is the honest way to compare a session with a cinema ticket.
The useful part is what it reveals about stake size. Doubling the stake doubles the hourly cost without lengthening the evening by a single minute. Halving it does the reverse. Almost every budget that collapses does so through stake size rather than through session length, which is why this calculation belongs before the first spin rather than after the last one.

Deposit limits
A deposit limit caps how much money may enter the account per day, week or month. It belongs to the account rather than to a card, so switching payment method does not shake it off. It counts money coming in, not money lost — meaning replayed winnings do not touch the limit even though they very much touch the budget.
The two directions are treated differently on purpose. Setting or lowering a limit takes effect immediately, because there is no sense in making somebody wait in order to spend less. Raising one sits behind a cooling period during which the request can still be withdrawn; if nothing happens, the old ceiling remains. That asymmetry exists precisely to blunt the impulse that breaks most limits.
Loss limits, time limits and reality checks
A loss limit is the stronger instrument, because it counts the net result: replay a win and the loss grows, and the limit notices. A deposit limit is blind to that. A time limit closes play after an agreed number of minutes. A reality check closes nothing at all — it simply surfaces a message showing elapsed time and current position, and hands the decision back. The last one suits a player who wants an edge on the evening rather than a lock on it.
In practice the three work as a set. The deposit limit protects the month, the loss limit protects a single evening from a good start that turned around, and the time limit handles the problem neither of the others can see: a session that ran twice as long as planned without the amount ever growing. Taking a time-out
A time-out is a short voluntary break, typically from a few days to a few weeks. While it runs the account accepts no deposits, play is locked, promotional messages should stop, and a withdrawable balance usually remains reachable. It cannot be cut short on request — which is the entire point, since a break that ends whenever you ask is not a break.
It fits the situation where play has stopped being enjoyable but a permanent step feels disproportionate. HAMPI, the national restriction
Estonia maintains a state gambling restriction register known as HAMPI. The difference from a single casino's self-exclusion is fundamental: the entry does not stay inside one operator but applies across operators licensed in Estonia at once, and it cannot be cancelled before its term expires. Which operators hold an Estonian permit is a matter of public record kept by the Estonian Tax and Customs Board, and that record is also where an unfamiliar brand can be checked.
Two financial consequences are worth knowing in advance. Real money stays with the player and is withdrawable through the normal route. An active bonus, free spins and partial wagering progress are usually forfeited at the moment the restriction takes effect, because finishing them would require the playing that has just been ruled out. If the balance is substantial, request the withdrawal before making the entry rather than after.
Chasing losses does not work arithmetically
The most expensive habit is not a large stake but the attempt to win something back. Another thirty euro placed after thirty euro lost does not cancel the first thirty; it only doubles the amount at risk. A machine remembers no previous session and owes nobody anything, and every round starts from zero. When money starts to feel like it is owed rather than spent, the only operation that reliably works is ending the session.
Four questions that cost nothing to ask
- Has money meant for bills or food ever ended up in play?
- Have amounts had to be hidden from the people you live with?
- Does a break from playing produce restlessness?
- Have you returned specifically to win back a loss?
